Preventive Dentistryon Vashon
Solid preventive care is the foundation for your oral and overall health. Good at-home hygiene habits, in combination with professional cleanings, can keep your smile free from decay and other oral health issues like gum disease. Regular exams allow us to monitor your oral health so you can address any minor concerns before they become larger, more costly, and more invasive issues.
Diagnostic & Prevention
We get it, it can be a bit too easy to put off your biannual dental exam and we don't blame you, life gets busy! But remember, skipping your appointments can cost even more time and money in the future. Coming in twice a year allows us to catch small issues before they become time-consuming, expensive problems. Regular check-ups only take about an hour and we assure you that we will make it a comfortable process. Let's keep that smile of yours healthy with our excellent preventive services.
Cleaning & Hygiene
Routine hygiene visits are essential to maintaining long-term oral health. At Langland Dental, our experienced hygienists use Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) with EMS Airflow to provide a more effective and comfortable cleaning experience. This advanced technology uses a warm mist of air, water, and powder to gently remove plaque and stains, without the scraping that many patients find uncomfortable.
Our patients appreciate a thoughtful approach to care, and we’re here to deliver it. We take time to explain what we’re doing and why, and we welcome questions from those who like to stay informed about their health.
For most patients, we recommend professional cleanings every six months, along with consistent brushing and flossing at home to support healthy teeth and gums between visits.
Digital X-Rays
We use state-of-the-art digital x-rays to safely and accurately assess your oral health. These images offer high-resolution views of your teeth and bone structure using a fraction of the radiation compared to traditional film x-rays.
At Langland Dental, we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. X-rays are recommended based on your individual health history, risk factors, and specific concerns, not just a set schedule. For example, if you have a healthy mouth and low risk of decay, we may take x-rays less frequently. If something needs a closer look, we’ll use targeted imaging to help us make an accurate diagnosis while keeping radiation exposure to a minimum.

Fluoride Treatments & Fluoride Alternatives
Fluoride treatments are a safe, effective way to help strengthen your enamel and protect against cavities. After your cleaning, we may apply a fluoride-rich varnish or gel to help rebuild enamel and make it more resistant to acids from plaque and sugar. It’s a quick, non-invasive step, and we typically ask that you avoid eating or drinking for about 30 minutes afterward.
For patients who prefer to avoid fluoride or have specific sensitivities, we also offer fluoride-free remineralization options. These treatments use calcium phosphate or hydroxyapatite-based products to support enamel health and reduce sensitivity. While not identical to fluoride, they offer an excellent alternative for patients seeking a more natural approach.
We’re happy to discuss which option is best for your health goals and lifestyle.
Dental Sealants
While dental sealants are often thought of as a preventive option for kids, they can be just as valuable for adults, especially those prone to cavities. At Langland Dental, we go well beyond the standard approach. Using Airflow technology and Isolite isolation, we create a clean, dry surface for better bonding, which means our sealants last longer and perform better than the average ones we see during exams.
Sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the grooves of your back teeth, where toothbrushes can’t always reach and decay often begins. This quick, painless treatment creates a smooth barrier that helps block food, bacteria, and plaque—reducing your risk of cavities for years to come.
Periodontal Care
Periodontal disease is more than just a gum issue. It’s a serious condition that can affect your entire body. Research now links untreated gum disease to increased risks of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and even colon cancer. That’s why our approach to periodontal care is focused on both your oral and overall health.
We use Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) to gently and effectively remove the harmful bacteria that cause inflammation and disease. This modern, non-invasive approach allows us to target biofilm more thoroughly than traditional methods, helping to reduce gum inflammation and promote long-term health.
Whether you’re in the early stages of gingivitis or managing chronic periodontal issues, our experienced team tailors your care to meet your needs. We pair leading-edge tools with patient education to help you stay proactive rather than reactive about your gum health.
Oral Cancer Screenings
Oral cancer screenings are a part of every preventive visit, and are a quick way to fortify your peace of mind. Through consistent exams, we can catch oral cancer early on, which gives us a better chance at treating it before it spreads. A routine oral cancer screening can even save your life!
Your dentist will examine your gums, tongue, and the rest of the soft tissues in your mouth, keeping an eye out for lesions and other abnormalities like lumps and discolorations. If there is anything that concerns us, we may recommend getting a biopsy, which will be analyzed by a specialist to determine the cause of the abnormality. Regular oral cancer screenings allow us to identify any potential problems before they become major issues.
Night Guards
Unconscious teeth grinding and clenching, known as bruxism, is a common issue that tends to happen at night while patients are asleep. However, night guards can help patients alleviate symptoms of bruxism by creating a barrier between your teeth that protects them from grinding-related damage. Each night guard is custom-made to fit comfortably and protect your smile while you sleep.
